DLT Registration Guide

Everything Indian businesses need to know about DLT compliance before sending SMS through Botify.

1. What is DLT?

DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration is a mandatory compliance requirement for any business sending commercial SMS, promotional SMS, or voice calls to Indian mobile subscribers, introduced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) under the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) 2018. All businesses — advertisers (Principal Entities) and telemarketers — must register on a DLT platform operated by one of the Indian telecom operators: Jio, Airtel, Vi (Vodafone Idea), BSNL, or Tata Teleservices. DLT registration ensures that only verified entities can send bulk SMS, which helps protect end-users from spam and unsolicited commercial communication.

2. Do I Need DLT Registration?

You need DLT registration if you are using Botify to send: • Transactional SMS — OTPs, order confirmations, delivery updates, appointment reminders • Service Implicit SMS — Notifications related to an existing customer relationship • Service Explicit SMS — Customer service messages with user consent • Promotional SMS — Marketing messages, offers, discounts • Voice Broadcast / IVR Calls — Automated voice calls to Indian numbers You do NOT need DLT registration for: • WhatsApp Business API messages (governed by Meta's policies, not TRAI) • RCS messages sent through Google Messages • Email marketing • Voice calls answered and handled by our AI Voice Agent on a business-owned number (though the underlying DID/SIP number must be compliant)

3. What You Need to Register

To complete DLT registration, you will need the following documents and details: For Principal Entity (PE) Registration • Business name exactly as registered • GSTIN (if applicable) • PAN of the business / proprietor • Certificate of Incorporation, MSME / Udyam Registration, or Shop Act license • Authorized signatory name, email, mobile • Business address proof • A company letterhead for the authorization letter For Header (Sender ID) Registration • 6-character alphabetic sender ID (e.g., BOTIFY, YRBRND) • Header type: Promotional, Transactional, Service-Implicit, or Service-Explicit For Content Template Registration • Exact message text with variables in braces (e.g., "Hi {#var#}, your OTP is {#var#}") • Template category matching the header type • Purpose of the message

4. How to Register on a DLT Portal

You can register on any one of the major Indian telecom DLT portals. Registration on one portal typically syncs your PE details across all operators, though you may need to register your headers and templates individually per portal. Popular DLT portals: • Jio DLT: https://trueconnect.jio.com • Airtel DLT: https://www.airtel.in/business/commercial-communication/home • Vi (Vodafone Idea) DLT: https://www.vilpower.in • BSNL DLT: https://www.bsnl.co.in • Tata Teleservices DLT: https://trai.smartping.live/entity/login Typical registration steps: 1. Create an account as a Principal Entity 2. Upload KYC documents (PAN, incorporation, GST) 3. Pay the one-time registration fee (usually ₹5,900 including GST) 4. Wait for verification (24–72 hours) 5. Register your Headers (sender IDs) 6. Register your Content Templates (must exactly match messages you will send) 7. Link with Botify as your telemarketer

5. Linking Botify as Your Telemarketer

Once your DLT registration is complete, you will need to link Botify as your authorized telemarketer so that we can deliver SMS on your behalf. Steps: 1. Log in to your DLT portal 2. Navigate to "Link Telemarketer" or "Telemarketer Consent" 3. Search for Botify's registered telemarketer ID (contact support@botify.in to get the current ID for each operator) 4. Approve the linking request 5. Our team will confirm the link from our side and enable SMS sending for your account Typical activation time: 24 hours after both sides approve the link.

6. Template Approval Timelines

Content template approval times vary by operator: • Jio: 30 minutes – 4 hours • Airtel: 2 – 24 hours • Vi: 4 – 24 hours • BSNL: 24 – 72 hours • Tata Teleservices: 4 – 48 hours Templates submitted on Friday evening or weekends may take longer. Botify does not control approval timelines — they are set by the individual telecom operators. Rejected templates usually fail because of: • Non-matching content between template and actual message • Missing or mismatched variable brackets • Wrong category (e.g., promotional content in a transactional template) • Use of disallowed words, URLs, or abbreviations Our support team can review your template before you submit to reduce rejection risk.

7. SMS Credit Cost & DLT Charges

DLT compliance adds small charges beyond Botify's per-SMS rate: • Botify SMS rate — ₹0.14 (transactional) / ₹0.18 (promotional) per message • DLT header charge — One-time fee per operator (varies ₹500 – ₹5,000) • DLT template charge — Usually free once the header is registered • TRAI per-message levy — Already included in Botify's rate There are no monthly platform charges from Botify for DLT compliance. You pay only for the SMS you send, plus any one-time operator fees during registration.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Can Botify register DLT on my behalf? We provide full guidance and step-by-step support, but DLT registration must be completed by the Principal Entity (your business) directly. This is a TRAI requirement — no third party can submit documents for you. What happens if I send SMS without DLT? Messages will be blocked at the operator level. In extreme cases, TRAI can impose fines up to ₹50 lakh on non-compliant businesses under the TCCCPR 2018. Do I need a separate registration per brand? No — one Principal Entity registration covers your business. However, you will need separate Headers (sender IDs) if you want to send under different brand names, and separate Templates for each message variation. Can I use Botify without DLT if I only send WhatsApp? Yes. DLT is only required for SMS and Voice under TRAI regulations. WhatsApp Business API is governed by Meta's policies, and our RCS and Email channels do not require DLT. How long does the full process take? Typically 3–7 business days end-to-end: 1–2 days for PE registration, 1 day to link Botify, and 2–3 days for initial headers and templates to be approved.
